Getting the most out of your employees

Is your team giving you the discretionary effort needed to win?

Your CEO and HR department are  undoubtedly having discussions about employee engagement, but that is a term I find too clinical and distant for what you really mean, which is: how do you ensure that your people are “…excited about coming to work and applying every bit of energy, creativity and passion they have toward performing their jobs instead of doing only what they have to do to in order to stay employed.”

I first heard the term ‘discretionary energy/effort’ early in 2008 while at CareerBuilder and it’s become one of my favourite concepts, because it is such a simple and powerful idea. Rather than worry about an abstract concept like employee engagement, I encourage you to think in terms of discretionary energy -and how much you are receiving from your team.

Two weeks ago, the fantastic people at ChangeThis published a manifesto by Ross Reck, Ph.D. & Harry Paul entitled: Destination: Work – Thriving in a Tough Economy by Tapping Into the Discretionary Effort of Your Employees and it is one of the best white papers I have read on employee engagement, and what you need to do as an employer to ensure you’re getting the most out of your team.
