Dan Pink on the science of motivation

As a salesperson whose performance has been quantified by commissions received, I find this July 2009 TED talk by Dan Pink to be a revelation for business leaders.

In the middle of this presentation Pink says that “management works great if you want compliance – if you want engagement, self direction works better”.

For engineers at Google, their famed 20% time has resulted in some of the greatest innovations and most successful products launched at Google. Imagine if salespeople were given the same opportunity to innovate – what do you think would happen? I have some ideas, but would like to hear your thougths…
